Got back from the dealership - apparently 2.5L 17 Mazda 3 have a different version transmission from 16 Mazda 3. The transmission shift (not on sport mode) tries to maximized fuel efficiency, therefore, causes the gear shifting to go from 4th to 6th (along w/ RPM) depending on the behavior of the driver. Well two days in a row now while making a low speed turn (less than 10mph) the power steering quit working. The first time it recovered after the turn was completed. The second time was today while making a "U" turn today.
Always stays on the full line. Also the majority of manufacturers consider one quart of oil burn between oil changes to be acceptable. The nice thing about the Mazda 3 if the oil level gets low it will warn you before any issues. But as others said you should be checking you level on any car between oil changes.
